....with Colour

In most brand new homes, the interior is generally magnolia so that the builder can show off the spacious rooms, but also to allow you a blank canvas.

Although a very practical colour, for a more homely feel, and to make it your own, you may wish to paint some of the walls with splashes of colour.

Top Tips

1. Which room are you going to paint? You need to take this in to consideration when choosing the colour as it may look great in one room but have a contrasting effect on a different room.

2. What do you use the room for? Tailor the colour to the rooms use. Once you have acknowledged what the room is used for, your choice in colour could have changed drastically.

3. You can always repaint so don't be afraid to see what affect the colour has in the room.

4. Go with how you feel and not with the fashion trends. Fashions can come and go in the blink of an eye so instinct is always the better option to go with.

5. Restraint. Don't feel that you need to paint the whole room, especially if using one strong colour. You can create a huge affect by painting one wall or even using that one colour to create a border.

How colours work

Blue is a very specific colour and can have varying affects depending on how deep it is. Greeny-blues can have a calming affect whereas a grey-blue can be a cold colour and a deep blue is a very male dominating colour. Many people tend to use a light blue in bathrooms or kitchens as it gives an atmosphere of cleanliness. Be cautious though as most bathrooms are deprived of light and their main source comes from a light bulb. This can therefore make the room feel cold.

Red is a passionate colour but if overused can appear as an angry colour.

Green is a calm and restful colour. This is a great colour for bedrooms and rooms of rest.

Yellow , whether pale or bright can have an uplifting effect. The pale is great for an instant lift without being overpowering and can be used in all rooms. For brighter yellows, a kitchen is probably the only room it can be used in.

Orange is another bright colour that is great to lift your spirits. Again, like the red you need to be careful how much you use.

Brown is a fantastic neutral colour.   However, if you use very dark browns it could make the room feel small and dark.   Perhaps painting one or two walls or using the colour as a border would be the best option. This colour can work very well in dining rooms or living rooms.
