This year's Worthing Invitation Cup took place  on 19 September and the players could not have asked for better weather.  Heather looks back on how the day progressed under her watchful and organised eye...!

An early start
It was an early 7 am start at the golf course where I was just in time to catch the first arrivals, there was a chill, which quickly dissipated to leave a warmth in the air, and drying out the golf courses.
Very quickly, jumpers were discarded, shorts appeared in the afternoon, and everyone agreed that they had had a fine day to play.
The course was in excellent condition, with fast greens on the lower (separates the men from the boys!)
There were no complaints with the temperature which recorded 19.5 Deg.C at 17.00 h!
After the game, teams were able to have a drink on the terrace and reminisce about the ‘if we... when we …’

The history of W.I.C.
The history of the Worthing Invitation Cup is worthy of a mention here.  The story goes back to 1994 where chat began at an annual bankers’ dinner which brought together Brian Phillips, manager of Barclays, and Martin Godsmark of Carpenter Box, to generate the idea of creating a golf day for professional services within the Worthing area.
Brian and Martin continued to run the event for six years, after which time it was decided to allow the winners to organize the event.

Hurdley Atkins won the very first Worthing Invitation Cup competition in 1994.  This year’s team of Steve Atkins, Ashley Jacobs and Wayne Kenward put in a valiant effort to try and match the 160 points made in 1994 but fell short by 3 points.
Jordon & Cook are currently in the lead with four consecutive years of winning (1998—2001).
R W Hilder & Co won in 2007 with 189 points beating all previous years’ scores.
